“Where did you see these wonderful things, child?” asked a man’s reverent voice suddenly. “Over the holm-oak?”

Lucia shook her head. “No, sir. Up in the sky—at one side of the sun as it was whirling about.”

At this Jacinta turned a puzzled face to her brother. “But I saw only one picture,” she whispered, “the one of the Holy Family. Did you see any others, Francisco?”

The latter was almost in a trance, and at first did not hear the question. Then very slowly he came to himself. No, he had seen only the Blessed Mother, in a white dress with a blue mantle, accompanied by Saint Joseph and the Child Jesus, both in red garments.

“The Child Jesus was about a year old, and He was nestling in Saint Joseph’s arms,” the little boy murmured dreamily, his shining eyes blind to the crowd that pressed about on all sides. “Oh, and He was beautiful, Jacinta! So beautiful. . . .”
